Upon approach of night, various spirits of lights dance thoroughly and make a splendid colorful sky in Shanghai Expo Village.

Upon approach of night, various spirits of lights dance thoroughly and make a splendid colorful sky in Shanghai Expo Village. The lights of floweriness, the colors of dreams as well as all sorts of designs together build a charming night, in which the guests can enjoy all the beauty of light and shade.

At 7 o’clock every night, 1.03 billion pieces of chips will shine together, which seems to endow all the buildings with intelligence and freshness.

The spirits of lights are in fact chips with LED semi-conductor lighting technology. At 7 o’clock every night, when the evening lights are lit, 1.03 billion pieces of LED chips will shine together in Shanghai Expo Village, just like billions of fireflies flying and circling under the direction of human intelligence.

The Eastern Crown is decorated sparkling by 23 thousand LED lights. Among the light and shade, the “Forbidden City Red” is fairly fascinating and the China Pavilion appears loftier. The Expo Axis becomes a dream zone of light and shade. Colors and designs change from time to time in Sunny Valleys and the large Tensioned Membrane Structures echo with lights of the same color. The 80 thousand LED lighting points are dancing at the crossings of the light-weight steel frameworks. Each shines more brilliantly in the other’s company, which builds a happy atmosphere of holiday. Colorful lights shine on the east and west elevations of the theme pavilions. The Expo Culture Center is just like a “flying disc” lying alongside Huangpujiang River and is ready to set sail companioning serious blue lights. Waves of different colors appear one by one on the large LED screen on the exterior wall of Expo Center, which makes it elegant and unique. Being sparkling, beautiful, mystic, and unique, the “four pavilions along the central axis” becomes the most charming view sight in the Expo Village.

A stage to display technology

The 5.28-square-kilometer village area, in which 80 percent of lighting apparatus adopt LED, is the world largest LED demonstration area.

Zhou Minhao, deputy director of Shanghai Municipal Commission of Economy and Information Technology, said that LED is the abbreviation of Light Emitting Diode. It is the fourth generation lighting technology. It has five advantages: the first is long operating life, generally as long as 60 to 100 thousand hours, 10 times that of fluorescent lamp and 100 times that of incandescent lamp; the second is low energy consumption, only 6 percent of that of incandescent lamp and 30 to 50 percent of that of efficient light-bulb; the third is short response time, usually within tens of nanoseconds; the fourth is easy to adjust the light and color: the lightness can be controlled by changing electric current and the color can be changed by deploying different wavelengths; and the fifth is green and environment protective, since it does not contain any harmful substances like mercury. It is based on these reasons that LED lighting technology and its wide utilization has become a focus in the competition of new energy-saving technology of each country.

“The application of 1.03 billion LED chips is a symbol that Shanghai Expo Village has become the world largest LED demonstration area.” It is introduced that 80 percent of the night lighting apparatus in the Expo Village adopt LED technology, all the lighting apparatus in the “four pavilions along the central axis” and Urban Best Practices Area adopt LED technology, and about 80 percent of the interior lighting apparatus of the pavilions adopts LED green optical source.

One important reason that LED lighting system is applied so widely is that, China, especially Shanghai, has got sound industrial foundation and technological support. As one of the LED industrialization bases in China, Shanghai has basically established relatively complete LED industrial chain, which especially has certain advantages at the two ends of the LED industrial chain, namely, the extension of the upper stream, the chips and the application sections of the lower stream. Regarding the upper stream, Shanghai owns such extension and chips companies as Rainbow and Epilight, whose technology is leading in China. As for the application in the lower stream, the products including Sansi Tech LED display screen and Yaming landscape lighting system hold a leading position in domestic market. At meantime, more international famous LED producers like Philips, GE and Daktronics have located their headquarters and R&D centers in Shanghai. The application of LED in Shanghai has expanded from guiding lights, signal lights, display screen and landscape lighting to white-light illumination system. All these have set sound technology basis for the brightness of the night sky in Expo Village.

More application fields

Under the Expo influence, an integrated development era of LED industrial chain will come to China, during which there will be more and more application fields.

“Shanghai Expo is the best stage to display the LED lighting technology. After the Expo, Shanghai should also become the best municipal platform of LED application.” said Guo Yansheng, director of Shanghai LED Engineering and Technology Research Center, the widely-used white-light LED in Shanghai Expo Village had accumulated experience for the future application of LED lighting system in municipal works, landscape lighting and home lighting systems.

For future application of LED lighting after the Expo, Shanghai has duly prepared to put the development focus of LED industry on the extension, chips and equipment of the upper stream and the high-end application in the lower stream and will continuously upgrade the industrial energy level through introduction, digestion and creation and enhancement of R&D investment. Shanghai has also emphasized on the development of key products like backlight, display, car light and lighting system, in order to bring along the complete development of the LED industrial chain.

Zhou Minhao said, after the Expo, Shanghai would increase the policy guide in LED industry, strengthen the support and investment, speed up the industrialization process and enlarge the industrial scale as soon as possible; accelerate the introduction of key projects, and attract famous enterprises and talents to settle in Shanghai, so as to form a LED technology and talent highland; centralize advantaged sources to cooperate in production, education, research and application in the fields of LED materials, chips, package, application design technology and equipment, and strengthen the R&D in generic technology and key technology; enlarge the area and scale of LED demonstration and bring along the development of the industrial chain through the demonstrative application; study and research on the creative mechanisms like energy-saving lamp allowance and efficiency management so as to build a good environment for industrial development.

Insider experts said, the large-scale application and demonstration of LED lighting system in 2010 Shanghai Expo would certainly deeply influence people’s future life and production activities. It can be foreseen that, after the Expo, there will be a round of upsurge in LED industry development in China.

LED’s are special diodes that emit light when connected in a circuit. They are frequently used as “pilot” lights in electronic appliances to indicate whether the circuit is closed or not.

LED’s are special diodes that emit light when connected in a circuit. They are frequently used as “pilot” lights in electronic appliances to indicate whether the circuit is closed or not. A a clear (or often colored) epoxy case enclosed the heart of an LED, the semi-conductor chip.

The two wires extending below the LED epoxy enclosure, or the “bulb” indicate how the LED should be connected into a circuit. The negative side of an LED lead is indicated in two ways: 1) by the flat side of the bulb, and 2) by the shorter of the two wires extending from the LED. The negative lead should be connected to the negative terminal of a battery. LED’s operate at relative low voltages between about 1 and 4 volts, and draw currents between about 10 and 40 milliamperes. Voltages and currents substantially above these values can melt a LED chip.

The most important part of a light emitting diode (LED) is the semi-conductor chip located in the center of the bulb as shown at the right. The chip has two regions separated by a junction. The p region is dominated by positive electric charges, and the n region is dominated by negative electric charges. The junction acts as a barrier to the flow of electrons between the p and the n regions. Only when sufficient voltage is applied to the semi-conductor chip, can the current flow, and the electrons cross the junction into the p region.

In the absence of a large enough electric potential difference (voltage) across the LED leads, the junction presents an electric potential barrier to the flow of electrons.

Personnel in the LED industry believe that LED TV and LED lighting will remain the two drives for the growth of LED in 2010.

Jan 06, 2010 – www.shcri.com – Nine Chinese official-led industrial standards were approved by Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information Technology and were fully implemented on January 1st, 2010. The standards include: Semiconductor Optoelectronic Devices — Blank Detail Specification for Power Light Emitting Diodes, Test Methods of Semiconductor Light Emitting Diodes, Sapphire Substrates for GaN-based Light-emitting Diode, Phosphors for Light Emitting Diodes, Technical Specification for Power Semiconductor Light-emitting Diode Chips, Test Methods of Semiconductor Light Emitting Diode Chips, Semiconductor Optoelectronic Devices — Blank Detail Specification for Lower-power Light-emitting Diodes and Series Program for Semiconductor Light Emitting Diodes, etc.

The nine standards cover LED materials, chips, devices and relative test methods. Among them, the Sapphire Substrates for GaN-based Light-emitting Diode specifies the parameter indicators, test method, physical dimension, experimental method and quality guarantee provision, etc of sapphire substrates for GaN-based lighting-emitting diodes. The Phosphors for Light Emitting Diodes stipulates the performance requirements, experimental method, testing rules, mark, package, transportation and stock, etc of phosphors for white LED; the standard also includes 5 marks of aluminate phosphor and 7 marks of silicate phosphor. As the technology and production of the new nitride phosphor need further improvement, it is excluded from the standard.

The implementation of the standards plays a significant role in regulating the semiconductor lighting market, perfecting the current institution, encouraging the trans-regional free competition of advanced enterprises and promoting the technical innovation. It will benefit the industry and market order.

It is predicted that the LED industry will be a hotspot in 2010. Large factories in South Korea, Japan, Taiwan and Chinese mainland launched LED TV successively. The market scale is about 15 million to 20 million sets, which drives the demand for high brightness blue LED. Moreover, Chinese government is expected to enhance the LED lighting demonstration project of “Ten Thousand LED lights in Ten Cities” to “Two Million LED Lights in Fifty Cities”. The LED industry shows an optimistic prospect in the TV and lighting fields with favorable news and great promise.

Before the general lighting market becomes prosperous, the LED application trend in recent years shows that the large-dimension display is the most thriving application. Presently, the application of LED in NB is frequent. However, promoted by Samsung, the LED TV becomes the LED application market with the highest potential. In 2010, the penetration rate is expected to reach 15%. The application in LED display is conservative in 2009 and 2010. However, in 2011, the penetration rate will exceed 20% driven by AUO and Innolux.

Personnel in the LED industry believe that LED TV and LED lighting will remain the two drives for the growth of LED in 2010.

One LED TV needs 500 to 800 LEDs, 30 times that of a laptop. Namely, when the penetration rate of LED TV reaches 3%, the LED consumption is the same as that of LED laptop with the penetration rate of 100%.

The scale of the LED TV market is estimated to be 15 million to 20 million in 2010. Compared with the over 2 million in 2009, there is six to nine times growth.

It is said that the LED TV shipment volume objective of Samsung is 10 million in 2010. Moreover, manufacturers of Japan, China, South Korea such as Sharp, AmTRAN, TCL and LG all express they will actively launch LED TV products. AmTRAN will present products with price competitiveness, which is expected to lead enterprises in the industry. The sharp decrease of the terminal sales price of LED TV will stimulate the rapid growth of the market.

Furthermore, according to the plan of Chinese Ministry of Science and Technology, the project of “Ten Thousand LED lights in Ten Cities” will enter the second phase in 2010. The number of semiconductor lighting demonstration cities will be increased from 21 to 50 with 2 million LED lights. It also plans to attract the attention of the industry to the potential opportunities recently. Chinese government predicts that the penetration rate of Chinese LED lighting will reach 30% in 2013.

The company also intends to get into LED lighting in a big way with products that can be adjusted for colour and intensity.

Sharp has announced that it will extend present technology to multiply colour display capabilities by three orders of magnitude.

Company president Mikio Katayama said at CES that Sharp has developed a colour generation technique that expands the number of colours it can generate from a billion to a trillion.

“For 140 years the three primary lights used to generate colour were red, green and blue [RGB], but this has its limitations. It can’t render all colours, ” Katayama said.

Sharp’s new screen technology will tip up first in the company’s AQUOS line of TVs, but Katayama said the company also plans to incorporate it into computing and commercial platforms.

“For designers and medical monitors it is very suitable for these technologies,” Katayama said. “It’s an application we are considering.” The displays will also use LED backlighting to reduce power consumption.

The company also intends to get into LED lighting in a big way with products that can be adjusted for colour and intensity. It will start flogging LED lighting to the industrial and commercial markets in March. Its lights can be installed in current fittings and will offer a much longer lifespan and 80 per cent power savings over conventional lighting sources, Katayama said.

He also pointed out that Sharp’s LED lighting products contain no mercury, unlike fluorescent lamps, and are made from environmentally friendly materials.

Following the developement of LED technique and the commission of Senba LED that to suggests and supplies our clients to adopt the cost-efficiency solution , Senba LED has decided to phase-out the indoor separated SMD series and suggest our clients to take the three-in-one SMD series from 1-February 2010 .

Senba’s indoor three-in-one SMD LED displays have more perfect effect in color processing , higher light intensity to make more clear and vivid images in the same viewing distance ,compeared to indoor separated SMD led display . The main reason is their encapsulated forms are different , three-in-one SMD is three illuminants of Red,Green,Blue chip are in a circle cell in their portable positions ,but separated SMD is three illuminants of Red,Green,Blue chip are separated and combine a pixel line ,so its ability of color process isn’t so good , plus the proper distribution of electricity of three illuminants (R,G,B) , the first encapsulation form will save more power consumption per sqmtr in the same pixel density .

Meantime , due to Senba’s tech team and high quality devices , we haven’t only manufacture the good products ,but also competitive and low price .

Welcome your inquiry !

IC distributor Supreme Electronics’ high-brightness white-LEDs are expected to enter Samsung Electronics’ LED-backlit TV supply chain, with shipments slated for January 2010, according to industry sources. The company expects its consolidated revenues to have double-digit growth in January 2010 thanks to increased LED product sales.

Supreme will distribute LEDs made by Samsung to makers who supply light bars used in Samsung’s LED-backlit TVs, and the products may be adopted in other vendors’ LED-backlit TVs in the future, the sources noted.

The IC distributor also ships Samsung’s driver ICs to Chi Mei Optoelectronics (CMO), and its revenues generated from this product line are expected to be boosted by the merger of CMO and Innolux Display, said the sources.

Supreme’s revenues may drop within 10% in December but still grow 10% in the fourth quarter on stable demand. The company saw net profits of NT$235 million (US$7.28 million) for the first three quarters, a significant increase from NT$2.7 million for 2008. Its January-November net profits are likely to reach NT$320-330 million, the sources added.
